August 4th 2017:

The 24th Beijing International Book Fair - Asia’s biggest - is about to get underway, with new areas devoted to lifestyle, arts and home interest books, sectors which are currently showing strong growth. Other fast-growing areas of Chinese publishing such as children’s books and popular non-fiction will also be well represented.

The exhibition venue this year includes seven pavilions and a total exhibition area of 92,700 square metres – 14,000 more than last year. Nearly 300,000 publications from more than 2,500 Chinese and international exhibitors from 89 countries and regions will be on display, and the overwhelming majority of the world’s top publishing companies will be present.

New zones will focus on lifestyle, health and wellness, cultural and creative industries

This year’s major developments include a showcase of lifestyle titles, such as cookery, wine, home crafts and DIY, reflecting the latest consumer interests and trends in rights buying.  A Chef’s Kitchen will host cookery demonstrations by top international and Michelin starred chefs plus wine tastings by world-renowned masters of wine to attract the attention and interest of visitors.

A “health and wellness” section will bring books to life with an interactive fitness experience from the US National Football League (NFL), featuring the latest instructional title on American Football.

In addition, a new section will be devoted to the arts. “Made in Creative” is a new 14,000 square metre section featuring brand merchandise solutions in the creative industries including art museums and institutions, cultural and creative organisations. The potential of the licensing market in entertainment, character, art and culture is relatively underdeveloped in China, and this section is therefore expected to attract a new audience of agents, licensees, retailers and distributors.

Children’s publishing continues growth

Children’s publishing continues its upward trend in China, as demonstrated by the fact that an entire hall – East 2 - will be devoted to children’s and educational publishing. The profound effects of the relaxation of China’s one-child policy are currently being felt with a rise in the birth rate.  The consequent interest in pre-school, early education and picture book titles is evidenced by the increasing number of children’s publishers taking part in BIBF.

While the Children’s Picture Book Exhibition is devoted to picture books for pre-school and early readers, in the West 3 ‘Reading to Living’ section, a 400 square metre exhibition space is devoted to books on popular science, which will showcase subjects such as the mysteries of space, inventions and creations, the kingdom of insects and scientific experiments.  There will also be special events and an interactive “Wonderlab” with stimulating, immersive experiments for school children from 6 to 16 years old.

The rejuvenated Silk Road and continued globalisation are impacting the Fair

This year’s fair is expected to show an increase in exhibitor and visitor numbers, due to the continued healthy growth of Chinese and Asian markets. Last year saw brisk trading throughout the Fair and more than 5,000 rights deals signed.

Fair Vice President Ms Liying Lin commented that this year’s Fair is expected to be busier than ever due to increased visitors and exhibitor numbers:

“Every year BIBF attracts more and more international exhibitors, due to better overseas co-operation and the continued globalisation of the Chinese publishing industry.  It is increasingly a two-way street as the number of translated works available grows – with Chinese titles now being sold internationally in greater quantity as well as content imported from overseas.”

“In addition to long-time BIBF exhibitors from the US, UK, France, Germany and India, a number of new countries and regions are represented this year. China has long been connected to the world’s cultural centres through the Silk Road, which today, as the Belt and Road initiative, is opening up new literary traditions and markets.  This year we are delighted to welcome Iran, which lies at the heart of great Persian literature, as our Country of Honour for the 2017 Fair, ” she said.

Iran’s 500 square metre pavilion will host eight authors and several prominent publishers.  The initiative - under the banner of “The colourful dream of the Silk Road” - includes plans for a cultural festival including live music and Iranian films.  It will be attended by renowned masters of handicrafts and winners of literary festivals as well as representatives of the publishing industry.

BIBF appoints first Reading Promotion Ambassador

Chinese novelist Liu Zhenyun is being appointed BIBF’s first-ever Reading Promotion Ambassador.
His novel, Someone to Talk to (一句顶一万句) was awarded the 2011 Mao Dun Literature Prize, and he is well known for his film scripts and other novels published over the past 25 years.  Liu Zhenyun will appear in consumer publicity and advertising in Beijing as well as at the Fair itself.

Programme of professional and consumer events planned

As in previous years, a number of special professional and consumer events is planned.  For new exhibitors and visitors, there will be training workshops available on how to take the first steps into the publishing market in China. There will also be over 1,000 consumer events, such as book launches, salons and author signings taking place both at the Fair and around the city.

“The Beijing International Book Fair is the single most important publishing trade event in Asia and as such, an essential date in the calendar for anyone in the publishing industry wishing to expand their business in China and Asia. We look forward to welcoming publishers, rights managers, agents and authors to this year’s Fair,” commented Ms. Lin.
